More Time & Money to Help Families Raise their Kids

September 17, 2019

For parents, nothing is more important than spending time with their kids. But raising them costs money, and those bills pile up early on — when all the new baby products and child care cost more.

You should be focused on spending quality time with your kids, and not worrying about how you’ll pay the bills. That’s why we’re going to make sure you have more money and time to raise them.

In 2016, to address the high cost of raising kids, we introduced the Canada Child Benefit. It gives more money to 9 out of 10 families — extra money for whatever your kids need, from healthy food to extra-curricular activities like sports and music lessons. Now, we’re going to increase that support even more, with 15% more money for kids under the age of one. That’s up to $1,000 more to help all those new expenses like diapers and baby food.

We’re also making maternity and parental benefits tax-free so you have more money when the costs of raising your kids are the highest.

On top of that, we think paid leave should be fair — and available for all families. So we’re going to bring in a 15-week leave for adoptive parents, which means an extra $7,000 for the average family who adopts a child.

Plus, we’re also going to start building a national system of guaranteed paid family leave. That means that even if you don’t qualify for paid leave through EI, you’ll still receive a guaranteed income in that crucial first year of your child’s life. It’s an ambitious plan, but one that will make sure no one gets left behind.

The Liberal team will always be there for you so you can be there for your kids.
